Meet the characters
Matilda
Matilda Wormwood is a genius. By the time she starts school, she has read all the children's books in her local library and can multiply large numbers with ease. Unfortunately, her parents are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice and her headmistress Miss Trunchbull is a beastly bully. But Matilda soon discovers that she has a very special power – one that will change the course of her story.
Miss Trunchbull
Miss Trunchbull is ‘a fierce tyrannical monster’ and the ferocious headteacher of Crunchem Hall. She believes that all children are ‘nasty dirty things’. This formidable figure used to throw the hammer at the Olympics and looking at her, you get the feeling that she could ‘liquidise you like a carrot in a kitchen blender’.
Miss Honey
Miss Honey is Matilda’s class teacher at Crunchem Hall, and does all she can to encourage Matilda in her abilities. The pair become firm friends, and it’s Miss Honey’s own story that leads Matilda to discover her powers.
Bruce Bogtrotter
Bruce’s mistake was eating a slice of Miss Trunchbull’s chocolate cake. He thinks he’s got away with it, but Miss Trunchbull devises a very particular punishment for him - and the whole school is invited to watch.
Mr Wormwood
Mr Wormwood is Matilda’s father, and a second-hand car salesman who takes great delight in swindling his customers.
Mrs Wormwood
Mrs Wormwood is Matilda’s mother, but she’s far too interested in her TV programmes and playing bingo to notice that her daughter is a genius.
Amanda Thripp
If there’s one thing Miss Trunchbull can’t stand, it’s pigtails. But Amanda’s mummy likes them… so when she wears them to school, she must face the wrath of the hammer-throwing headmistress.
Lavender
Lavender is Matilda’s best friend. She’s gutsy and adventurous, and devises her own way to cause their terrible headmistress a few troubles - involving a glass of water and a particularly slippery creature…
Hortensia
Hortensia is well-versed in battle with the Trunchbull, and she tells Matilda and Lavender what life at Crunchem Hall is really about, and the many visits she’s paid to The Chokey.
